During the Civil War, the same redoubts served as Fort Holmes, a Confederate base of importance to shipping and smuggling. During the American Revolution, it was home to Fort George, a British fort. Old Baldy was retired from service in 1935 but has been restored and is open to the public for tours.īald Head Island is tiny but has played a part in two American wars. Built in 1817, Old Baldy has guided many ships safely into the mouth of the Cape Fear river for over 86 years. The most famous landmark on the island is North Carolina’s oldest lighthouse. Bald Head Island Club full or temporary membership is required to use the facility. There's a poolside snack bar, a gazebo bar, and a full service restaurant, Horizons, offering lunch and dinner year round. The Bald Head Island Club’s incredible aquatics complex includes a heated 25-meter adults-only lap pool and a zero-entry family pool, along with waterslides, a splash pad and playground. The pools are closed November through March, and hours vary by season. The Shoals Club pools are open to members, guests and temporary members only. The Shoals Club staff offers water aerobics, water Zumba and parent/tot swimming lessons. Towels, showers, changing areas and restrooms are provided. Poolside food and beverage service is available from the Sandbar Grille. On Bald Head Island you’ll find pools at both the Bald Head Island Club and the Shoals Club.Īt the Shoals Club, a lap pool overlooks a shallow children’s pool and fountain area.
